Our CFL expert weighs in with his prediction for the Week 9 matchup between the Bombers and Ti-Cats
The Blue Bombers (1-6 SU) face the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-4 SU) in a pivotal Eastern Conference matchup Saturday in Guelph, Ontario. Action gets underway at 1 pm eastern and CFL odds favor the home side by double-digits which may seem a bit out of place given their losing record at home and abroad. Two of Hamilton’s wins have come against this dysfunctional Bombers team, however, and for this week’s CFL best bet we are staying clear of the side and betting the total.
WEEK 9 CFL – BLUE BOMBERS AT TIGER-CATS (-10.5, O/U 51.5)
The changes continued this week for the last place Bombers as O-Co Gary Crowton was relieved of his duties and replaced by Marcell Bellefeuille. This should be a positive move for the Bombers who struggled under Crowton and his inability to adjust to the three-down. Bellefeuille brings valuable experience to the Bombers and should help ignite the club’s anemic offense. The CFL vet was head coach of the Ti-Cats for three seasons (2009-11) and spent last year south of the border with the Omaha Nighthawks (UFL).
Bellefeuille new outfit has had to deal with a fair share of injuries this season and the most recent blow was to WR Chris Matthews, lost for upwards of four weeks with a foot injury. Last year’s Outstanding Rookie, Matthews had just one TD this season in four games and Winnipeg will need to call on Terrence Edwards to help carry an even bigger load. WR Doug Pierce will replace Matthews in the starting lineup and QB Max Hall draws in for his second start of the season, looking to improve on his mediocre performance last week against the Tabbies.
Hamilton QB Henry Burris had his way with the Bombers secondary last week putting up 333 yards through the air with a TD and zero interceptions. Hank is spreading the ball amongst all his receivers and to this point the Bomber secondary has failed to find an answer. A Healthy Andy Fantuz only makes things worse for the Bombers D who will have their hands full once again. Unless the Bombers find a way to disrupt Burris early it could be another long day for the D.
The forecast in Guelph looks good for Saturday and under Bellefeuille we expect to see a revived Bomber attack on offense. With Hank playing at the top of his game our top play for this week is on the Bombers and Ti-Cats going over the number.
Pick: Take the Over
KEYS TO THE GAME – BOMBERS
Get Burris off his rhythm early
Protect the football. Winnipeg has the worst turnover ratio in the CFL
KEYS TO THE GAME – TIGER-CATS
Protect Burris. If Hank is given the time he will pick apart the Bombers secondary once again
Blitz the QB. The Bombers have failed to prove they can counter the blitz
