Week 3 CFL Picks: Saskatchewan at Toronto

The Roughriders storm into Rogers Centre Thursday to face an Argos team who have won four-straight at home

Week 3 of the CFL kicks off Thursday in Toronto and Pick Sixty Sports columnist Pat Archibald rings in with his take on the coaching matchup along with a prediction to get this weekend’s football betting action underway. The line opened at ‘Pick em’ (O/U 53.5) and it looks as if the public are siding to the home side and the “Over”, with some online sportsbooks showing gameday totals as high as 55.

This is one of those match-ups that showcase coaching strengths. George Cortez, Rider offensive coordinator, does a great job of maximizing his squad’s strengths and making adjustments as the game progresses. He’s pitted against Chris Jones who many consider the game’s top defensive coordinator. Jones has always been a master of second-half adjustments. In game one he limited Hamilton to three second half points and outside of a turnover and penalty-aided, short field touchdown he kept BC to a second-half field goal as well.

Saskatchewan is coming off two divisional wins and was sky high after defeating Calgary last week at home. Toronto returns home after a disappointing effort against BC.

There were two areas that stood out in those games. As poorly as Toronto played offensively they limited BC to just 24 points. Saskatchewan was given deserved credit for their victory against Calgary but the haunting fact is they were shredded by Calgary in the first-half. They were very vulnerable against the accurate passing of Drew Tate.

I see this as a potential letdown game for Saskatchewan and they will be facing a motivated and well coached home team. If Toronto can limit their penalties a win is well within their reach. Ricky Ray has the ability to pick them apart effectively and Jones’ defense should keep up their momentum. Saskatchewan is a very good team but this is a tough spot for them. It is interesting to note that they have zero turnovers this season. I’m calling for that streak to end in the dome.

Pick: I’ll take Toronto at -1
