The Calgary Stampeders ride into hostile territory Friday as they visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders for Week 2 CFL action
Led by second-year starting quarterback Drew Tate, Calgary opened the season with a convincing 44-32 romp over the BC Lions. Emotions were high in a city still recovering from one of the region’s worst-ever floods and Tate stood tall, completing 19 of 27 pass attempts for 237 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. As impressive as Tate was, his performance took a backseat to Non-Import RB Jon Cornish who lit up the Lions for 174 yards on 24 carries with two majors.
The Green Riders dismantled the Edmonton Eskimos 39-18 in Week 1, forcing four turnovers and limiting the Eskies to six points through the first three quarters. The win ended a six-game losing streak for the Riders at Commonwealth Stadium but they can expect to have their hands full this week vs. Cornish and Stamps.
CFL odds for this week’s game opened with a total of 54 and after initially moving down to 53.5 the number has reversed its course up to 54 (Bookmaker). Calgary is 4-1 SU/ATS in its past five visits to Saskatchewan but that hasn’t stopped a rush of public betting to the home side and as of Friday morning it looks like the majority of sports betting sites are offering the Roughriders at -1.5 with a few spots bumped to -2.
Saskatchewan took early command of last week’s game and was able to limit the Eskimos to just 88 yards on the ground they can expect a much more balanced attack from the Stamps. Riders RB Kory Sheets, who rushed for 134 yards on 17 carries vs. BC, will be a test for the Stampeders D as well, and this game already has the makings of a CFL classic. The Stamps and Riders put up a combined 83 points in Week 1 and we expect that trend to continue on Friday.
