The 2018 CFL season is set to kickoff Thursday when the Winnipeg Blue Bombers take on the Edmonton Eskimos. Week 1 CFL odds show the Eskies as a 6.5-point fave and Edmonton did away with the Bombers 39-32 in their last visit in November.
Edmonton was a cover machine on the road last year, going 7-4 ATS including a current streak of five-straight ATS wins. It’s driving up the line for this matchup with a couple sportsbooks already testing the waters at -7 points, but that’s a lot of wood to chop.
CFL road favorites of more than -3 points are only 61-68-4 ATS in Sports Database history and at -7 points or more, that record slips to 16-20 ATS (44%)
The Argos and Riders hookup Friday and early lines show Toronto as a modest 1.5-point fave. The Argonauts are looking to defend their 2017 Grey Cup title but the past 10 champs were just 3-7 straight up in their first road tilt of the year. Favorites in this profile are just 2-5 SU/ATS.
Next week Toronto will play host to Calgary, they team they beat for the title in November. Is it possible the Boatmen get caught this week looking ahead?
Week 1 CFL Odds and Data
This weekend’s matchups feature the Ti-Cats at Stamps (-9.5 and O/U 53) and Montreal Alouettes at BC Lions (-6.5 and O/U 49). Heavy chalk and it’s no wonder that bettors are stashing early money towards the dogs. Since 2005, Week 1 CFL favorites are only 8-20 ATS — a pitiful 28.6% hit rate!
Totals in those 28 games produced 9 overs and 19 unders but as anyone that regularly bets the Canadian game knows, it can be a gut wrenching feeling to be sitting on an “Under” ticket through the final minutes as the clock stops on virtually every play.
