UFC 169 Picks and Previews

Our MMA analyst was 2-2 for tidy profit in his predictions for Fox 10 and today he runs through some of top matchups for UFC 169 with predictions, updated odds and fighter history

UFC 169 is set for Saturday at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and unlike the Super Bowl; no one is too concerned over wind or temperature for this event. It’s all about the matchups, odds and predictions and MMA expert Chris Barth rips right into it with a lightweight bout featuring Jamie Varner (21-8) and Abel Trujillo (11-5).

Varner has alternated between wins and losses since his underdog win over Edson Barboza at UFC 146. Abel Trujillo has gone 2-1-1 (NC) in his four UFC appearances and looks to extend his winning streak against the experienced Varner. I think this fight has potential to be an exciting stand up war. I see Varner being the faster fighter and picking apart Trujillo with his jab and boxing. If the fight is close I see Varner going for take downs and trying to win rounds. The online UFC odds favor Varner at -152 but sportsbooks offer a nice plus-money payback on this fight going the distance.

Prediction: Varner by decision (+200)

Frank Mir (16-8) vs. Alistair Overeem (36-13) is a heavyweight matchup of two fighters in dire need of a win. Overeem, the former K1, Strikeforce and Dream heavyweight champion has lost two in a row after defeating Brock Lesnar in his UFC debut. Mir, a former UFC heavyweight champion, is on the biggest losing streak of his 13-year career dropping his last three fights to Josh Barnett, Daniel Cormier, and Junior dos Santos. Neither of these fighters is known for their gas tank so look for the fight to be stopped early. I see Mir trying to weather the storm much like he did with dos Santos and barely surviving the first round. Overeem will brush away Mir’s weak takedown attempts in the second round and finish him by ref stoppage midway through the round. This online UFC betting option (Overeem in the second) was paying 5-to-1 early in the week and has been bet down to 4-to-1 but at the current price, it is still a bet to consider.
