Preseason NFL Picks: Dolphins vs. Cowboys

Miami and Dallas are a combined 1-6 SU/ATS at the Hall of Fame Game in Canton

The tearful Saturday Hall of Fame ceremonies are over and it’s time for preseason football betting to take center stage Sunday when the Miami Dolphins face the Dallas Cowboys in the annual August kickoff from Canton, Ohio.

Miami will play each of its first three preseason games this year away from Sun Life Stadium and in HC Joe Philbin’s second season at the helm you would think this team might want to try and get off to good start. The Dolphins were 7-9 SU last season and 7-8-1 ATS but the team holds promise in 2013 and perhaps the first step should be cracking their goose egg at the semi-prestigious Hall of Fame game.

Miami is 0–3 straight up and ATS in their previous three appearances at Canton, Ohio

[dropcap2]N[/dropcap2]FL odds for this game opened at Miami -1 and O/U 34 and it looks as the Fish and the “Under” are the two popular options with online sportsbooks. As of Saturday night the best line on the favorite is Dolphins -2.5 (-115) and the total is down to 32.5.

News out of the Cowboys camp that QB Tony Romo would be ordered to sit this game out was the No. 1 bit of information precipitating the move on both the pointspread and Over/Under odds and although Romo looks fully recovered from the April surgery to remove a cyst from his back, Cowboys HC Jason Garrett isn’t taking any chances.

Dallas has a 1-3 SU/ATS record at the HOF game including a 16-7 win over the Bengals in 2010 and Garrett’s preseason record since taking over is 5-3 SU (3-5 ATS) but after missing the playoffs for a second straight year, it’s clear the Cowboys have their sights set much higher this season. The rest of the QB depth chart in Big D reads Kyle Orton, Nick Stephens and Alex Tanney but you can probably expect to see a healthy dose of the run-game as coaches get a read on the new O-line combos.

The Dolphins were 0-4 SU/ATS in the 2012 preseason and three of the losses were by double-digits. It translated into a 1-3 start to the regular schedule and considering how the first half of 2013 sets up, Miami cannot afford to come out flat. After starting the season with back-to-back road games in Cleveland and Indianapolis, the Phins will take on Atlanta, New Orleans, Baltimore, Buffalo, New England and Cincinnati before a Week 9 bye. Let’s just say that the Week 1 road game in Cleveland is not one the Fish can let “get away”.

The value on this game was certainly at -1 or -1.5 but laying less than a field goal we still like Miami’s chances to cover. Behind Ryan Tannehill the Dolphins offer Matt Moore and Pat Devlin under center and they look to take advantage of each and every preseason snap we are backing the favorite.

Pick: Take the Dolphins
