NHL Picks: Devils at Capitals

In the last full day of NHL betting action before the 2014 Olympic hockey break, Cory Schneider and the New Jersey Devils are in Washington to take on Russian superstar Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals

Washington’s roster boasts five Olympic players heading to Sochi for the world’s biggest hockey tournament but before they go, Washington would like to notch two more points and leave for the break on a high note. The Capitals offense had started to click before a 1-0 shutout loss to the Islanders on Tuesday and then down 2-1 through 40 minutes against the Jets, Washington rallied with three goals in the third to derail their former division rival (Thrashers). Online sportsbook operators were ghosting the Caps as high as -140 for today’s contest but that line has taken a step back with the announcement Cory Schneider would start for New Jersey. The best NHL odds on the board as of right now are at Pinnacle where the Caps can be found at -120.

DEVILS at CAPITALS

NHL Odds Online: Caps -120 and 5 OVER (-110)

Saturday’s have been good to the Caps the past few years and according to the SDQL database, Washington has posted a 16-1-2 record in its past 19 Saturday home games. That mark is the best in the NHL since April, 2011 and it’s worth noting that the Devils’ Saturday road record since 2010 is just 16-21-3. New Jersey does boast a 7-1 record in its past eight games against the Caps but the current edition has struggled to score goals. On the road this season the Devs are tied for 24th with Florida at 2.26 goals per game (GPG). New Jersey exploded for seven goals in a blowout against the Blues on Jan. 21 but other than that game the team has scored just 1.55 GPG in its past nine are looking forward to a chance to regroup during the Olympic break.

The Caps will roll with Lloydminster, Saskatchewan native Braden Holtby today after his solid effort Thursday against the Jets. Holtby’s 36 saves improved his record to 16-13-2 on the season with a 2.97 goals-against average and .910 save percentage. He is 3-1 in his last four starts and will be looking for a bit of redemption after giving up five goals to this Devils squad on Dec. 21 (5-4 OT loss).

Pick: Take the Capitals
