The Columbus Blue Jackets stumble into New Jersey Saturday looking to snap a four-game losing streak. We have an Over/Under prediction for the game backed by a couple SDQL trends from the Sports Database!
Columbus is a hurting unit right now and they’ve lost four-straight, scoring two goals or less in each game. The most recent setback was last night in Ohio to the Leafs and during the first two months of the season the Jackets are 1-6 O/U on the road off a home game with zero rest. They never scored more than three goals in any one of those games. NHL odds for tonight’s game favor the Devils (-180) and the total is 5.5 Under -125, which we feel is a really good price given the situation.
AROUND THE BOARDS – NHL TRENDS
Columbus is 17th in scoring (2.6 GPG) and that rating is due in part to a 3-1 start where they won two at home vs. the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames. The Jackets scored eight goals in those two contests and they also notched a 3-1 win at Buffalo to open the season. Columbus also scored five goals in a win against the Sharks Oct. 23 but that was a San Jose team in a stretch where they allowed four-plus goals in five of six games. San Jose also lost to Buffalo next game out so what does that tell ya?
The Devils have given up goals in chunks this year but they were against some worthy opponents and mostly on the road:
– At Philly (8th in home scoring, T-7th overall)
– At Washington (13th in home scoring, 12th overall)
– San Jose (No. 1 in road scoring, T-7th overall)
– At NY Rangers (lost 4-3 in OT; Rangers are T-11th in overall scoring)
– At Pittsburgh (1st in both ‘home’ and overall scoring)
When the Devils can hold an opponent to three goals or less they are 61-193-55 O/U (76-percent UN), one of the top “Under” plays in hockey. We featured this SDQL NHL system in our New Jersey Devils season preview and so far this year it has produced 1 over and 4 unders (80-percent). Look for the low scoring trends to continue this evening.
Pick: Take the Jackets and Devils Under 5.5 goals
