Expect a fast start tonight at Ford Field as two losing teams look to get back on track
Rex Ryan and the New York Jets roll into the Motor City Friday night to kick-off their 2013 NFL preseason action vs. the Detroit Lions. Last year was a train wreck for the Jets and although the Tim Tebow era has passed, there is a new QB controversy between incumbent Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith. NFL odds favor the home side Lions at -3.5/-4 and the total ranges from 35.5 at William Hill up to 36.5 at other online sports betting outlets.
Ryan has never been under so much pressure since taking over as head coach in New York and with healthy competition brewing at several key positions, we have to expect more out of the Jets than the pitiful 7.8 points per game (PPG) they averaged in last year’s preseason. New York’s D was of course a letdown last year but NFL teams that can’t score in the preseason are usually in for a long season.
Ryan has a 6-10 SU and 7-9 ATS record with the Jets and those 16 games resulted 9 overs and 7 unders in including three unders in 2012. Against non-conference foes the Jets are 5-1 O/U and it’s worth noting that in their first preseason game the Jets have played “Over” the total three of the past four years.
Lions HC Jim Schwartz is getting a lot of love from the books considering how his team stumbled down the second-half of last season with eight consecutive losses but a lot of the credit in this betting line has to go to Detroit’s 12-4 SU and 11-5 ATS mark in preseason the past four years. The 16 games resulted in 7 overs, 7 unders and a pair of pushes but of note, the first Lions preseason game since 2009 went over the number three of four times.
There is some more data for this contest posted on the Greg Dempson Sports home page but for my top Friday play I’m going with the total sailing over 35.5 points (2.0-unit play up to 36.5)
