MLB Tips and Trends – Philadelphia Phillies at Boston Red Sox

Phillies left-hander Cliff Lee is looking to cap a brilliant month with a win tonight at Fenway

The Boston Red Sox rolled their successful series from the weekend into a 9-3 win against the Phillies Monday and tonight they’ll look for a fifth-straight win in the second of this four-game series.

Ryan Dempster (2-5, 4.69) was the last Red Sox starter to lose a game (May 23) and he hasn’t looked all that sharp since recording a win against the Blue Jays May 2. Dempster did hold the Twins at Bay, striking out eight hitters through seven innings on May 7 but his three starts since then have been disastrous.

Run support has been soft in seven of ten starts for the first-year Sock and things won’t come easy today against Phillies chucker Cliff Lee (5-2, 2.48). Ranked 28th in the majors at 3.49 runs per game (RPG), the Phils don’t provide much run support for any of their starting pitchers but Lee hasn’t needed much, guiding his team to four-straight wins including a complete game shutout against the Marlins May 22.

[quote_text color=”#000000″ text_color=”#ffffff”]When Cliff Lee starts, the Phillies are 30-3 after going at least 6 innings and giving up no home runs and they won in his previous start for a net profit of $2540.[/quote_text]

Oddsmakers are favoring the Red Sox in this game by as much as -130 on the money line and that seems like a lot of credit given Dempster’s track record vs. the Phillies. His last five starts with Chicago, the Phillies scored 30 runs and in 17 career starts Dempster has a 5.27 ERA against his old NL nemesis.

KillerSports.com also highlights this gem supporting a play on the road dog at +120. The Phillies are 30-3 with Lee when is coming off a six-plus inning performance with no home runs allowed that led to a victory. The breakdown for this profile can be seen with this SDQL code:

team=Phillies and starter=Cliff Lee and s:SHRA=0 and s:SIP>=6 and s:W

Philadelphia was a dog in four of those 33 games and Lee put in a brilliant performance each time (4-0). We’re getting superb value on the better pitcher in this spot and our SDQL trend pick of the day is on the road team.

Pick: Take the Phillies
