Hot Umpire Trends

The SDQL database helps identify home plate umpire betting trends in baseball

Wednesday’s baseball card gets off to an early start with three day games in the National League including the New York Mets, who will try and complete a three- game sweep against the San Francisco Giants for the first time in 19 years. The ‘feel good’ story of this game is that Zach Wheeler (2-1, 4.29 ERA) is starting vs. the team who drafted him sixth overall in 2009 but the reality is that MLB odds makers are listing the Giants as huge moneyline favorites, putting Matt Cain (5-5, 4.85 ERA) in charge of spoiling the party.

Cain has hardly been a suitable candidate for spoiling parties in the Bay Area, sporting a 15-28 team record since 2006 as a favorite off a loss but with the way the Mets have been hitting the ball, we are turning our attention to the total. New York has scored 5.0 runs per game (RPG) in its past 10 with 14 runs the first two games of this series. They’ve needed at least six runs to give Wheeler a chance and his last three opponents scored 23 runs, almost eight per game!

San Fran’s offense ranks 21st in baseball with 3.96 RPG but there is no question they’ll be up for this game and the home plate umpire is Todd Tichenor, who has seen National League games go “Over” the total at a 63-percent clip since 2008. See for yourself with this SportsDatabase.com link:

HPU = Todd Tichenor and H and total < 8 and league = NL and date >= 20080807

The total is 7 Over (-119) and our first play for Wednesday is on the Mets and Giants to score at least eight runs.
