We start the week on the west coast where Greg looks to extend his strong start to the season with handicapping tips, systems and a free hockey prediction on the New York Islanders vs. Anaheim Ducks
The Anaheim Ducks return home after posting back-to-back road victories in Chicago (3–2) and St. Louis (5–2). First up in this three-game home stand is the New York Islanders (8–17–5), who have nine-straight road games to match their longest slide in team history. New York is having trouble putting the puck in the net as they have failed to score more than two goals in a stretch of seven games dating back to Nov. 23.
Having a man advantage has not helped the Isles and on the road the team’s 27th ranked power play is just 4 for 43 (9.3-percent). Meanwhile the Islanders have given up 15 goals in 37 short-handed situations (40.5-percent) away from the Nassau Coliseum and they’ve been outscored by an average of 3.9 to 2.2. Their last five games overall New York has been outscored by a margin of 3.8 to 1.0.
[quote_text color=”#000000″ text_color=”#ffffff”]In the first two games of this road trip the Islanders have been outscored 8-1[/quote_text]
The Isles top line of Thomas Vanek, Kyle Okposo and John Tavares combined to take only three shots in Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Kings but it’s a different story with Anaheim’s No. 1 line. Ryan Getzlaf has 20 points during his current streak, Corey Perry has scored in five straight games while Dustin Penner has five goals and three assists in his last seven. The Ducks have won three in a row against the Islanders at home, the most recent a 4–2 victory on January 6, 2012.
The Isles have Anders Nilsson between the pipes this evening. He allowed five goals on 26 shots in a loss to the Blues on Thursday. This is his third start in their last four games and he’s 0–1–2 with a 3.26 GAA and .883 save percentage. Jonas Hiller is in the net tonight for the Ducks and in his eight home games Hiller has stopped 228 of 242 shots for a 1.75 GAA. He has a .942 save percentage with two shutouts.
MONDAY NHL PICKS
The Ducks have played only 12 home games and they’re 10-2 with an average score of 3.9 to 1.8. I also note that in the first half of the season, teams winning 30-percent or less of their games who are off a road loss by three or more goals (applies to the Isles) do not fare well in their next game. All road teams in this situation are only 9-27 the past three seasons as well as 14-43 the past five seasons. I’ve invested 1.5-units on the Anaheim Ducks at +140 on the puck line.
Free Pick: Take the Ducks -1.5 (+143) for 1.5 units
Greg’s overall record at Pick Sixty Sports is 10-3 including 2-0 (+2.1 units) in hockey. Visit the Pick Sixty Facebook page for more sports betting news you can use!
