Florida is nearing the end of a less than productive road trip where the team’s only win came via shootout in Detroit. Tonight the Panthers will face a Columbus Blue Jackets team who tied for the third best record in the month of January and our loudest hockey handicapper has something to say about betting the total
Chirper’s were treated to a win in last week’s NHL betting feature and tonight the Florida Pan Handlers are in for a treat when they march into Columbus. The Jackets are listed as heavy faves and my action is on the Over/Under but for side bettors, Greg Dempson has contributed a solid system that’s hit 80-percent in the past five seasons.
FLORIDA at COLUMBUS
NHL Odds Online: Blue Jackets -157 and 5.5 UN (-130)
Tonight’s theme in Columbus is “Fill your Blue Jackets with cash money” as Tim Thomas and the 15th place Florida Panthers slump into town. Florida was 6-7 in January but against this surging BJ’s team, Timmy T is gonna have to put on a fine display of goaltending if the Panthers have any chance of squeaking out a W. The Crap Jackets have had quite the turnaround of late going 10-4 in January including an eight-game win streak from Jan. 6 to the 23rd (franchise record). As for the Panthers, they will play away from home for the seventh time in eight games and appear to have hit a wall entering the finale of their current four-game road trip. The past two losses against Boston and Toronto, Florida surrendered six goals per contest and that sets them up for the following system supplied by our good friend, Greg Dempson (@gdsports):
Play AGAINST road teams (Florida) that allowed 5 or more goals in back-to-back games who are outscored by an average of 0.5-plus goals per game on the season. Florida has been outscored 3.06 to 2.31 (0.75 GPG) in 2013-14 and this system is 28-7 (80-percent) vs. the money line the past five seasons!
Keeping the puck out of its own net has been an issue throughout the season for Florida and that 3.06 goals-against average ranks 27th overall in the NHL. The Panthers allowed 3.1 GPG through January and they’ve given up 17 goals the past four games, going 1-3 in the process. Florida has converted on only 1-of-49 power-play chances in their last 15 games and Thomas has the NHL’s 25th ranked save percentage at .912. I have a feeling the infamous White House snub along with the year off did not do him any favors. Go home Tim, you’re 40; it’s over.
Just like the original Columbus searching for new ground, this Columbus team is trying to climb its way into an elusive playoff spot. They entered today one point back of idle Detroit for eighth in the Eastern Conference and will look to take full advantage of this road worn Panthers squad. I’m leaning towards the home side but it’s a bit steep on the moneyline so for tonight’s top play I went with a total. Chirper’s Pick: Panthers-Jobbies OVER 5.5 +110 (***out of *****)
