Edmonton kicks off its season Saturday at home vs. the Saskatchewan Roughriders
The offseason in Edmonton brought drastic change as veterans were moved out and replaced with lesser known, unproven players. Possibly the biggest change was at the QB position which saw an offseason acquisition of former BC backup QB Mike Reilly. Whether or not Reilly is “the next big thing” remains to be seen but many a CFL pundit has him tagged as the real deal and Saturday in the City of Champions, Reilly will make his fourth-career CFL start and first for the Eskimos.
Reilly was expected to compete with Matt Nichols for the starting role in Edmonton but Nichols was lost for the season with a torn ACL. Reilly has taken the reigns and looked decent in preseason action but the real test will come when he faces first team defences and points are on the line. Like so many CFL squads, the Eskimos season could hinge on the health and play of the QB position.
BY THE NUMBERS
CFL odds on the opener favor the Roughriders -2 with a total of 49.5. It’s an early kickoff in Edmonton with the game slotted for 3:30 pm ET. The Eskies are 14-4 SU and 10-9-1 ATS the last 20 times hosting the Greenriders and those games have produced only 5 overs compared to 15 unders.

Edmonton started off 3-1 SU last season and won both of its home games against the Roughriders and was 5-0 SU to start 2011. They have a current home win streak of 6-straight vs. their neighbor to the East and the Eskies will not have to contend with Geroy Simon during the opener after the veteran slotback injured himself during the final preseason game against Calgary. We need to see how Reilly handles adversity in his new role and that could take a few starts. The first six teams in action during the 2013 season have each scored 30-plus points and 49.5 is the lowest total of the group but we still expect a lower scoring game and will suggest considering the “Under”.
