The Tampa Bay Rays begin the final week with a road series against the New York Yankees
Most of the fantasy baseball leagues have wrapped up for the season and this week’s teams in real life are crunching for a playoff run. First we’d like to say congrats to all the winners and runner-ups in their respective fantasy leagues and second, let’s hand it to Major League Baseball for the new playoff format that keeps things more interesting for more teams into the late stages of September.
Tampa Bay (87-69, .558) is tied for the lead in American League Wild Card standings with Cleveland (86-70, .551) and the Rays are coming off a four-game sweep against the Baltimore Orioles. Tampa won yesterday’s game 5-4 in dramatic fashion and the team is getting hot at the right time. The win improves their September record to 12-10 and with five runs scored in three of the last four games, trips to hitter-friendly New York and Toronto setup well for the Rays to finish the season strong.
Matt Moore (15-4, 3.34 ERA) is on the hill tonight and the Rays opened as a -109 favorite but current baseball odds show lines in the neighborhood of -115. The past five years Tampa has a 24-12 record in road games that followed a home win and Moore is 4-2 lifetime against the Yankees with a 4.26 ERA. He’ll face off against Hiroki Kuroda (11-12, 3.17 ERA) who has not fared well against the Rays in four starts. Earlier this year Kuroda gave up seven earned runs through six innings of a 7-2 loss and we look for the Tampa bats to cause him trouble today as well.
Tampa showed a lot of grit against the O’s and the fact they play well off a home win is supported by a 17-0 record in games after the team scored more runs against relief pitchers than starters. Click on the link for a complete breakdown at SportsDatabase.com.
For today’s MLB play we are taking the Rays -115 on the moneyline.
