Felix Hernandez shut the A’s down in his first start against them this season and today’s baseball preview suggests he can do more of the same at a nice price
The Seattle Mariners are in Oakland this weekend, trying to gain ground on an Athletics team who have opened up a double-digit lead on the M’s through the past couple months. Oakland (41-28) leads Texas by two games in the AL West and is playing their first divisional series since May 24-26, a three-game sweep over the Astros that propped their divisional record up to 20-8.
Seattle (30-38) won two of three vs. the Astros earlier this week and took the opener of this series Friday night but they are still just 15-18 in the division and need a strong performance today from Felix Hernandez to make a push towards .500. Hernandez is 37-29 on the road since 2007 once the calendar turns to June and those games have produced a record of 19 overs, 42 unders and 5 pushes with an average total of 7.9. There is a ton of data for betting every baseball game on the net and handicappers need to figure out a profitable way of getting it to work them. Sports Data Query Language (SDQL) is one of the most powerful tools available in today’s market and its ‘starting pitcher’ data allows us to break down win-loss records into monthly segments.
Certain big name pitchers don’t find their groove until warmer weather hits but it won’t stop bookmakers from charging hefty prices out of the gate. Take Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, for example. Whether home or away, King Felix has a pedestrian record of 42-44 in the early months, costing a $100 dollar bettor more than 15 units the past seven years (starter=Felix Hernandez and month in [4, 5] and site) but look what happens when the calendar hits June:
That same $100 dollar bettor has suddenly banked 26-plus units and that includes double-digit gains when Seattle is on the road. Today we are getting a good price on the King with baseball odds at one sportsbook offering +105.
The A’s are 21-11 at home and before Friday, had not lost at the O-Co Coliseum since May 17. A.J. Griffin (5-5, 3.78) gets the nod for the home side and although this is generally a ‘pitcher’s park’, the wind is gusting up to 15 mph towards right field and Griffin has been known to serve up his fair share of taters (12 in his last 10 starts).
The M’s are 10th overall in home run hitting this season and lead the majors in dingers away from home at 1.36. Oakland is third-last with a 0.75 HR per game average at home and Felix is getting groundballs to fly balls at nearly a 2:1 rate. Take advantage of the nice line and jump on the Mariners as our baseball play of the day.
Pick: Take the Mariners +105
